Avian Language is a debut solo exhibition for Andy Moerlein at Boston Sculptors Gallery. This show features a forest of shaped wood, altered trees and ceramic birds in conversation.

Moerlein's work has a story teller's attitude - that tightrope walk between naturalism and symbolism. The ceramic birds fill the wooden structures with a communication that is evident yet ambivalent. Some snuggle together; others turn their backs to each other while harnessed together by bonds of tension. The birds seem ordinary - an embodiment of stillness - frozen in place, yet each conveys a gesture that implies movement. It seems that there is more to be understood than is portrayed. Stones convey, birds imply dialogue, and materials whisper of contradiction and illusion. These birds at rest are prone to startle and fly at any moment.

Flock Together

Donna Dodson's second solo exhibition of her iconic wood sculptures, Flock Together, presents sixteen different interpretations of a bird-headed female form.

In this series, Dodson is exploring the idea that similar types of people choose to congregate with other like-minded souls, even if the similarities are beneath the skin, feather or breed, and not immediately apparent or obvious to the viewer.

This series started with Cardinal, as if women could hold high office in the Catholic Church. Further imaginings led to the creation of Little Red Riding Hood, who is anything but little; White Stork, who is carrying a baby in her tummy instead of her beak; and Culture Vulture, who is highly cultured, deeply ravenous and hollow - lurking on the edges of culture to fill up.

Latest Honor - Summer plans!!!

I was awarded two prizes for my sculpture WAVE that has been at the Fruitlands Museum in Harvard MA for the past 6 months. Part of my FIRST PLACE JURORS AWARD, I have been invited back as the Artist In Residence for 2012. I will build several large installations and teach workshops over their April - November exhibit season. I have also agreed to build a large permanent steel and cement sculpture to grace their museum's lawn. I am exhibiting AVIAN LANGUAGE at Boston Sculptors Gallery January 4 - February 5. This show will be a conglomeration of mostly small scale indoor sculptures that have a bird presence. This solo show is running concurrently with FLOCK TOGETHER a stunning series of new carvings on a bird theme by Donna Dodson. The interaction between our works, and the contrasts inherent in our divergent personalities promises to make this an exciting pair of simultaneous exhibits.

In February 7 - March 3 I have AVIAN INSTINCT at Plymouth State University's Karl Drerup Art Gallery. This event will present a new body of work that is very much installation in nature. It will incorporate video and soundscapes in a generous gallery show. This is a long drive in the depths of winter, but WELL WORTH THE TRIP. Here is a video teaser.

Manchester - Derryfield art teacher and sculptor Andy Moerlein from Bow, NH, and Donna Dodson, a sculptor and frequent collaborator from Boston, MA have recently completed a Sculpture Park Residency in Verbier, Switzerland. HIGH ALTITUDE SCULPTURE - A RESIDENCY is an exhibit of water colors, drawings, photos of their work as well as images of the work produced by the 7 artists in residence in Switzerland. For five weeks, (May 21 - June 25, 2011) a roster of emerging and critically acclaimed Swiss, British and American artists were invited to create a museum without walls in the high Alps overlooking Verbier Switzerland. Verbier is a world class destination for skiing, snow boarding, and alpine hiking and is the home of the Verbier Classical Music Festival. The artists participating in the residency include Gregory Coates, Musa Hixson, Timothy Holmes, Zak Ove and Kiki Thompson. Will Ryman, Andre Raboud, Edouard Faro, Etienne Krahenbuhl, Nathalie Delhaye and Josette Taramarcaz also loaned monumental sculptures to the first high altitude sculpture park exhibition.

The creative challenge Dodson, Moerlein, and the other artists addressed was suggested by Paul Goodwin, Curator to Tate Britain, “New Monumentalism: art, nature and community.” Using views of the mountains where the sculpture park is located as a creative departure point, the residency was designed to be an incubator for ideas and creativity amongst the artists. The purpose of the residency is to create an international contemporary art dialogue between the artists and the local community. Over a five week working residency the artists shared their work in public talks, taught their methods and creative approaches to local children, and built a substantial permanent sculpture.

In conjunction with this exhibit there will be a panel discussion on Saturday October 15th, 2011, 2-4pm in The Derryfield School’s Lyceum:

TOWARDS A NEW MONUMENTALISM

For the past two months I have been immersed in a sculpture residency in Verbier, Switzerland. For five weeks, (May 21 – June 25, 2011) a roster of emerging and critically acclaimed Swiss, British and New York-based artists were invited to create a museum without walls.

Using the views of the mountains from the track where the sculpture park is

located as a creative departure point, the artists were free to interpret the site-specificity of their work. Following are some open-ended questions set by Paul Goodwin, curator to Tate Britain, to challenge the participating artists:

How can artists (and art practice) convey and/or respond to the challenge of

environmental sustainability in such extreme conditions?

Are the grand narratives of monumentalism, triumph over adversity and

conquest of nature still relevant in age of global conflict and potential

environmental catastrophe?

Is monumental sculpture an appropriate method or scale to engage diverse

local communities?

What is the relationship of man to mountain, art to environmentalism?

How can a sculpture park articulate the historical and the contemporary within

a framework that addresses current issues of relevance to local mountain

communities as well as global environmental politics?

The sculptures created in Verbier, will be exhibited 12 months, braving the four seasons at a high altitude of 2100 meters (6,800 feet). The Verbier 3-D Sculpture Park is free to the public and only accessible by foot, bike, skis or dogsled.

My reply to the challenge was to create two major permanent pieces, a temporary work for the opening of he sculpture park and several interventions I have titled PLACEMENTS.

UPROOTED 2011

When a tree is wind beaten to the extremes of uprooting, it is a trauma that leaves a scar beyond the individual that is toppled. When a forest titan is blown over and the earth is torn by the tenacity of roots, even boulders can be hoisted aloft. These excavated stones leave an impression, the uplifted roots draw a shape, the remnant hollow becomes a shelter.

Man has marked this earth deeply. We are well rooted.

I am unsure how as an artist, I can respond to the extremes of the Alps. My work is not a triumph over adversity. It is a personal story. I am recording my presence. In the fragile state of today's world I am determined to draw with a mark that lasts. In this Residency I aim to leave a significant trace.

UPENDED (a ghost print) 2011

When a printmaker places a second damp page on the plate without pausing to re-ink, a ghost print is produced. UPENDED is a retelling of UPROOTED. Like a ghost print, much of the mass is gone. The impression is skeletal, but structure is evident. In a second pressing, only the deepest image remains.

UPENDED works well in all seasons but was designed for the brilliance of the mountain terrain. Fog and clouds isolate the linear design and suspend the stones in vapor. Sun on snow creates a stark shadow reflection. The image will be doubled, compressed, stretched as the sun angle changes throughout the day.

The steel rod has been bent and shaped into layers that lack geometry but that evoke volume - much as a brush patch occupies a distinct physical space with abundant disorder.

UPENDED implies both geologic and organic events. The stones reference authentic shape and colors while revealing a hand-made sensibility. They invite trust in their materiality as boulders, but show a painterliness, brushstrokes and surfaces that are distinctly created. Splash, drip and color confound believability. That was my goal for these still-life rocks.

POSTSCRIPT 2011

POSTSCRIPT is an homage to Chinese artist Zhan Wang whose reinterpretations of ancient philosopher stone relics as stainless steel present tense events has me intrigued. It is also a bit of a nod to Roxy Paine.

The PLACEMENTS are a past/present tense unknown participant based performance event. The discovery of these stones is unpredictable and unknown to me as the artist. They are a gift to Verbier. The discoverers who find these work may or may not derive a complete understanding of their material and PLACEMENT. These events are inspired by the writings of Robert Smithson.

The Emerson Umbrella -- BIG ART 2

The Emerson Umbrella in Concord MA has installed its second annual large-scale outdoor sculpture exhibition, BIG ART 2. The exhibition includes works by members of the Boston Sculptors group, from New England and the northeast, and from around the country. It represents works in many styles and media — figurative and abstract, monumental and intimate — and materials from carved granite to cast bronze to concrete to carved wood to natural branches and hand-made stone. The exhibition will be on display through November 1, 2o11.

Artists represented include: Anne Alexander, Ben Cabot, Scott Cunningham, Peter DeCamp Haines, Tom Holmes, Hilary Hutchison, Michio Ihara, Andy Moerlein, Louise Peterson, Antoinette Schultze, Greg Spitzer, Margaret Swan, John Weidman, and Joseph Wheelwright. Sculptures are selected by a panel of jurors of five accomplished New England artists. Joseph Wheelwright is a master carver of stones, trees, bones and other natural materials. He lives and works in Boston and Vermont, and was Artist-in-Residence at Fruitlands in 2008. Linda Hoffman works with materials she finds in the New England landscape including old tools, barn boards, tree trunks, shells, and bones. She transforms them into sculpture using their inherent qualities, natural wonder and aesthetic purpose. Artist-in-Residence at Fruitlands in 2009, Zsuzsanna Szegedi is a Hungarian-born painter and a recipient of a Puffin Foundation Artist Grant. Her latest paintings were sponsored by the Gamblin Artist Colors Company. Barry Van Dusen is an internationally recognized wildlife artist, and watercolorist, with work widely exhibited throughout the United States and Europe. He was Artist-in-Residence at Fruitlands in 2010. Barbara Scofidio works with a variety of contemporary artists throughout the region and is the owner of NOA Jewelry, Fine Handcrafts & Gifts in Groton, West Concord and operates the museum store at Fruitlands.

Snow Sculpture Contest February 18 – 20, 2011

We began Saturday morning with a 4' x 4' x8' block of snow, a few ordinary (and extraordinary) tools, and warm clothes. By nightfall our storied bird was striding into being.

We worked hard as a team refining our ideas from the rough bulk

to a finished polish in the early hours of Sunday morning.

11am judging found us proud and confident that the Polar Peacock was fully realized.

The Tale of the Polar Peacock

The Polar Peacock is as elusive as the Northern Lights. Exotic and beguiling the icy white fowl has been part of northern folk lore on every continent. Reports of unspeakable iridescence and feathered protection from survivors of near freezing experiences have been repeated by elders to children around warm fires for thousands of years. There is no known substantiation for the bird. Why it appears to those in desperate freezing conditions, and why it is perceived as savior and provider of warmth at those moments of greatest need, is baffling. But the fact is that the Polar Peacock has been consistently imagined by a wide spectrum of lucid and competent explorers whose lives have brushed the precipice of death and then been miraculously spared. Our snow carving is a vain attempt to capture the enigma and magic that is this most rare of arctic phenomenon.

This exhibition includes the work of ten artists who use wood as medium and conceptual source. In an era when technology has altered the realm of art making as much as everything else in our lives, these artists celebrate that most ancient and primal of raw materials - wood. While the material is the unifying theme, each artist creates unique forms that draw their inspiration from the inherent beauty, natural qualities, and enduring power of wood.

In many ways wood offers a corollary to the human body suggesting living, organic, sensuous form with trunks and limbs, heart and skin that is also subject to growth, change, and ultimately decay. Our interdependence with trees is so elemental that we breathe what they exhale and they “inhale” our exhalations. Indeed, many peoples of the world throughout human history have attributed animistic qualities to trees, including the belief in hamadryads or tree spirits. Trees and their fruits have sheltered us, warmed us, fed us, and inspired us. Connected to our survival in the most fundamental of ways, humans have also employed wood to create art - whether carving magical totems or fabricating new images from the scavenged detritus of a society. As an artistic medium, wood offers both strength and pliability, elegance and rawness, commonness and preciousness.

The ten artists exhibiting their art in Wood Work employ various processes from assemblage to carving, carefully selecting a specific wood variety to gathering salvage, working figuratively to non-objectively, and on the wall, floor, or pedestal. Paul Bowen, Rosemary Broton Boyle, Stephan Fowlkes, and Dawn Southworth collect scrap wood and convert this found material into transcendent form. The sense of time and history, the distressed surfaces, and hints of earlier uses inform the finished pieces that become impossible contraptions, shrines, or humorous musings. Donna Dodson explores the mystical relationship between humans and the animal kingdom, creating archetypal chimeras through the carving and polishing of carefully selected types of wood, revealing their unique grain and color. Rob Millard-Mendez describes his sculptures as large toys, employing dark humor to comment on human foibles. Blending folk art references and formal conceptual concerns, his art engages the viewer on several levels – both fun and interactive as well as provocative and challenging. Michael Beatty, who is a professor of art at consortium school, The College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, borrows construction methods from traditional, functional forms of woodworking, boat building, and metal fabrication. Most recently he’s been interested in the correlation between the natural world and mathematics, seeking out the basic patterns underlying the complexity of what we see in Nature. Andy Moerlein also looks to Nature, exploring the interaction of human psyche and natural forces - whether the rapid fluctuations of weather or the gradual shifts of geology - ultimately creating highly personal narratives. In his richly process-oriented work, Bob Lewis creates mysterious and unsettling monuments to failed endeavors, lapsed dreams, and human hubris. Greg Mencoff, explores the psychology and implications of the built form and the architecture of ordinary things. Of his sculptures, he comments, “their content is a reflection of the process…instinct has us build, and through that process is learned something of ourselves, helping to define a culture”.

Associate Professor of Art Elli Crocker curated this exhibition with the help of students Molly Burman, Phoebe Cape, Scott Coffrin, Victoria Grogan, Nina Haglund, Ann Kerrin, Ashley McNelis, Claudia Olcese-Rivera, and Stephanie Richardson.

Thirty-two artists from here and across the country will pay homage to 20th-century sculptor and printmaker H.C. Westermann in an exhibition opening Monday in the University of Southern Indiana, with a public reception from 2 to 4 p.m. Oct. 17.

"Jumping Off of Cliff: A Tribute to H.C. Westerman," set to run through Nov. 11 in USI's Kenneth P. McCutchan Art Center and Stephen and Palmina Pace Galleries, offers artistic tribute to Westermann, known to his friends as Cliff.

Westermann, an American sculptor and printmaker who served in the U.S. Marines in World War II and Korea, produced a body of sculptures and prints that have received critical acclaim in exhibits around the world.

Each participating artist has used Westermann's work "as a launching point for explorations of craft and conceptual depth, while also retaining honesty and humor, clear earmarks of Westermann's work," according the show's description.

The coyote/wolf/dog has always been a shape shifter -- lingering outside the fire’s cast light, observing all. They know when to come in fast and dangerous to steal untended meat. They know when to saunter, all swish and loose boned, or submit, belly dragging, to get what they want.

I am a dog for you. I can be what you want me to be. I will become your greatest need.

This weekend Donna Dodson was the featured artist at Sculpture Fest and I presented a most ambitious piece: UPWELLING. The show and subsequent reception were professionally curated, installed and promoted by Charlet Davenport and her marvelous assistant and fellow artist Peter Davenport. This is a drop dead awesome party every year. This year was even better due to the fine weather. As we drove up I saw nine different state licence plates in the lot. Over 500 people came and went as the day progressed. This show has the feel of a Storm King or Decordova in casual dress. The "bring your picnic" theme makes a real event of this reception. The Davenport's landscape and the judiciously selected art create an atmosphere that is irresistible. People came, had fun, made interesting conversation, and left deposits to buy at least 7 of the pieces in the show!

UPWELLING was a delight to see again. When I first imagined it, my schedule was too full and the challenge of one more summer work was immense. I started with only the most basic of plans: a simple drawing, four rather large handmade stones and a pile of silver painted sticks. The work was improvisation within my familiar structures. I was eager to use the lush landscape - a dramatic hillside of SculptureFest - to my advantage. I am not usually so spontaneous in my work, but fitting the piece into my summer and composing it to respond to the site forced me to take unusual risks. As I battled to get this large work up, I was alternately delighted with my results and forced to rebuild and reconfigure. Even with a friend, Matthew Porat, tugging, lifting and assisting, I simply ran out of both daylight and materials in my first attempt to install. A second long work day concluded just as I tied the last saplings together. I drove away with a few hasty pictures and I was pretty sure I was thrilled with my results. Yesterday's visit reassured me that my confidence was well founded. If you can possibly see this work, please do. SculptureFest in Woodstock VT is an exceptional setting and I am excited that UPWELLING is a new direction within my vocabulary of landscape and structure.

UPWELLING is a necessary inversion of subsurface water: deep beneath erupts.

Glacial erratics were wondered at and worshipped by early man. The impossible placement of abused rounded scarred stone in a mature forest, on a lake shore, or mighty alone in a meadow provoked sensations of revelation.

Love can cause similar upheaval. Inert mass can become buoyant, effervescent, preposterous.

We have been practicing and experimenting for months. This fire sculpture will be our first of many. Be there -- IF YOU DARE!

A fire sculpture of a Phoenix by artists Donna Dodson & Andy Moerlein will be set alight on the confluence at the Steeple Street Bridge at 9:15pm during Waterfire Providence on Saturday August 14th, weather permitting. Rain date: August 28th. The artists will build a 12ftx12ftx12 sapling structure, wrap it with straw, soak it in mineral oil and set it on fire.

The collaboration between Moerlein and Dodson is born from a love of the wild. Moerlein takes inspiration from events in the natural world that leave visual marks which strike a narrative chord in the artist. Dodson takes inspiration from the mysterious nature of animals that spark her imagination. Together these artists seek to create a piece that will surge up from the earth and burst into flame as if it was a creation of nature.

With the help of many dear friends FINDING FAULT was installed at Kendall and Athenaeum Streets in Cambridge last weekend. The 100' long work is reminiscent of Listening For Lightening, but on a bigger scale. The large empty fenced site dictated a bolder visual mark. The work will be on site through December 2010.

Finding Fault is a story of explosive forces. Deep fractures result in gut-rending separations. Mature rooted tree—toppled—sheared lengthwise—suspended in parts. This golden exposure, these raw wooden lines, is a calligraphic stroke that speaks a personal message.

Moose Myth

There is a story told of twin moose brothers, each robust and noble, who shared the Northern Kingdom. One fine day they met in a glade and neither would yield. They charged and impacted with a resounding crash of angry power. In the ensuing battle they entangled antlers in a death lock. Unable to separate, they continued to battle. After days of throwing their enmeshed antlers and bodies about, unable to eat or drink, exhausted, they were on the brink of death. A small child came upon the feuding but now feeble twins and offered to free them, but only if they would promise to live in peace. They thankfully accepted the offer.

Freed, the twins stood on two feet in honor of their human friend and lived their lives striving to solve conflicts with negotiation and compromise. They agreed that one would live by the sea and rule over the Portsmouth waterfront and all the bridges and seaways linking NH to the world. The other mightymoose would rule inland, near the confluence of the Nashua and Merrimack Rivers, majestically protecting the vital and diverse city of Nashua.

A white elephant is an idiom for a valuable possession of which its owner cannot dispose and whose cost is out of proportion to its usefulness or worth.

To possess a white elephant was regarded as a sign of justice and power, peace and prosperity. The tradition derives from tales which associate a white elephant with the birth of Buddha, as his mother was reputed to have dreamed of a white elephant presenting her with a lotus flower, a symbol of wisdom and purity, on the eve of giving birth.

Because the animals were considered sacred and laws protected them from labor, receiving a gift of a white elephant was both a blessing and a curse: a blessing because the animal was sacred, and a curse because the animal had to be retained and could not be put to much practical use.

In the Pali scriptures it is duly set forth that the form under which Buddha will descend to earth for the last time will be that of a beautiful young white elephant, open-jawed, with a head the color of cochineal, with tusks shining like silver, sparkling with gems, covered with a splendid netting of gold, perfect in organs an limbs, and majestic in appearance.

An excursion of magnitude, I went to Toronto in October to present a paper on my personal experiences as a parent. The Association for Research on Mothering invited me to join a session entitled Mothering and Creativity. I discussed my shared parenting experience and then presented images of my work as a sculptor. It was an exhilarating and challenging event that I feel went very well (the chair of my session suggested I publish my observations. "Your perspective is one that is too rarely considered in the academic research.")

My sculptures are generally personally revealing. They are an attempt to speak out images that clog and cannot be expressed in any other medium.

Navigating by moonlight is romantic. Some boats are made for the impossible journey. Most paths split and force decisions upon the artist. This work contains a useless boat, a gilded split tree and possesses regrets that cannot be rafted away on a barge.

Mother, is based on themes of emergence, shelter and symbols. The taut strung sapling structure lifts and holds a sacred enclosure. Within this space lays a spiral of silver-gray Ithaca shale. The saplings will form a woven interlocked pattern that is both decorative and powerfully functional. An overlying cover of cement with

incised imagery bases and solidifies the apparently insubstantial sapling structure. There is an intended contrast between mass and structure.

We all know the sensation - moist evening air, a sudden gust, all breath held. Sad voices from the house. Foreboding clouds moving so fast they shake the earth beneath my feet. I tremble as the first drops chill. I cannot go back inside – ever again. I am waiting for my sky to fall.
